James was born on September 27, 1936, to S. Q. and Alma Decker Smith. He was a wonderful man of upstanding character and integrity who loved his family and friends dearly. He lived and served with a beautiful, humble spirit that honored Christ, reflecting the love of God in a mighty way. He served for 45 years as a dedicated deacon, along with other various positions, at Bethlehem First Congregational Methodist Church in Walnut Grove. His military service consisted of 6 years active Air Force and 2 years active Navy, as a SeaBee, which included a 9-month tour in Vietnam. He concluded his military service with 15 years as a Naval Reserve SeaBee, retiring honorably as a Chief Petty Officer, with 23 total years of military service. In his civilian career, James spent 29 years as a master craftsman at Anniston Army Depot, where he served as a welder. In retirement, he enjoyed hobbies such as metal work, carpentry, and wood carving because he loved intricate designs and working with his hands.
