On the morning of November 15, 2021, Dorothy Katherine “Dot” Roland Roberson, of Altoona, passed away at the age of 97. She died peacefully within her home with her family by her side. She was a longtime resident of Etowah County and a member of the Attalla Church of Christ.
Dot was born to Thomas William Roland and Mary Lucille McLeod Roland in 1924. She was one of six children. Sister to Thomas Olin Roland, Evelyn (Marvin) O’Donnell, Edna (Sonny) Ethridge, Billy Roland, and Lyn (Lou) Roland.
During World War 2, wanting to serve her country, she began working in Birmingham on military aircraft, repairing B-29 bombers. For her hard work during this time she was later on inducted into the American Rosie the Riveter Association. Dot returned to Gadsden to attend Alabama Technical College and there met the love of her life, Gene. In June 1945 they were married and together they raised two children, Bobby and Vicki.
Dot was a devoted homemaker. She was proud and honored to be our matriarch, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She looked forward to every holiday and special occasion that gave her a chance to cook a big meal and have her whole family together at their house.
Dot will forever be remembered for her caring heart, warm smile, and unconditional love for each one of us. She is proceeded in death by her husband, Gene. She is leaving behind her son, Bobby Gene, her daughter, Vicki (James) Rhodes. Her brother-in-law Travis Roberson. Grandchildren Eddie (Katrina), Sonya (Chris), Tara, Stephanie (Tim), Jeremiah, and Isaiah. Great grandchildren Kara (Brian), Ryan , Taylor, Trey (Ally), Evan, Ross, Trevor, Fay Katherine, Maggie, Archer, and Clare. Great-great grandchildren Brooks and Greyson.
She was a special woman who always provided support and love for her family. She enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events, and flower gardening. But nothing brought her more joy than babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We will hold dear in our hearts our fond memories of her. This gentle, loving, caring, and wonderful woman has left a permanent mark etched on our hearts and will be greatly missed. And though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate her life and find comfort that she is in heaven, reunited with Papaw, and they’re together watching over us.
All are welcome for visitation at Morgan’s Funeral Chapel.
625 Gilbert Ferry Rd SE, Attalla, on November 19, from 11am to 1pm. Funeral service will be at 1 pm. Stanley Freeman and Eddie Whitson will be officiating. Pall bearers will be family.
