Bruce “Papa” Parnell, born on February 20, 1947, in Gadsden, AL, passed away on April 11, 2024 in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was 77 years old. Bruce was a beloved figure in the community, known for his kind and generous nature.
Bruce was a successful business entrepreneur, best known for opening a chain of furniture and retail stores in Gadsden and beyond. In 1981, he founded Country Cottage, eventually selling it to his brother. He later established Parnell’s Furniture which has since evolved into Parnell’s Mattress, a thriving business in Gadsden.
A selfless and hardworking individual, Bruce was cherished by many for his fun-loving and soft-hearted personality. He found joy in boating, searching for the perfect building for a business, and enjoying a good wine.
Bruce Parnell is survived by his loving family: Rebecca, Greg Fisher (Brittany Jester), Tiffany Parnell, Robbyn Bukowski (Mickey and Leia), Jennifer Thompson (Cortney, Jasmine, Trace, and Aubrey), Zeya Parnell, Dawn Dibble, Keith Parnell, Dana Parnell (Laurie), Lynn Camp (Kevin), and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Joyce Parnell, his brother Mark Parnell, and his beloved grandson Jace Parnell.
The family would like to thank Dr Layla Wren and staff, Dr Castillo and staff, Alabama Hospice Care, and Shelby Farlow. They would also like to give a special thank you to chosen family Jessica Devine and Arrice Bell.
A memorial service to honor Bruce’s life will be held at a later date. Bruce will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
