William Allen McBride, affectionately known as Mac, went home to God on May 28, 2021 in Atlanta, GA. He was 61 years old: While some might consider that young; to Mac, it was ripe old age – he was the oldest teenager in America. And having lived all over the world, it was hard to pinpoint a hometown.
Mac was born in Fort Bragg, NC, to William “Bill” McBride, of Youngstown, OH and Olga Musson of London, U.K., on May 15, 1960. He spent his youth on army bases in Virginia and, for a while, Germany. After graduating high school in Prince George County, VA, he went to the University of Mississippi and played defensive back on the football team.
Following his stint trading bonds on Wall Street in the roaring 80’s, Mac went to Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and graduated with a JD at the top of his class. As an attorney, he had worked at such prestigious firms as Sullivan & Cromwell, Skadden Arps, and Clifford Chance. He specialized in security class actions, international arbitration, and corporate litigation, representing multinational businesses, banks, and financial institutions. His law practice led him to take up residence in New York, London, Hong Kong, Palm Beach and finally, Atlanta, where he retired as a Shareholder at Baker Donelson in 2016.
Outside of work, Mac was an intellectual, gifted horse rider, titillating storyteller, gourmet cook, chess player, and connoisseur of fine wine and cigars. He was also an avid sports fan, supporting Ole Miss, Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Vikings, all of which caused him constant grief. Most important of all, he doted on his wife of almost thirteen years, Paulina (née Chow) and their mutt, Boo Radley. He was always at his happiest when taking family road trips, singing aloud to alternative rock songs, completely out of tune.
Mac was preceded in death by his father Bill and pet hedgehog, Pins. He’s survived by Paulina, Boo, his mother Olga, and sister Mika.
A memorial mass to celebrate Mac’s life will be held at 10AM on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Cathedral of Christ the King, with Monsignor Frank McNamee officiating. Interment will be determined at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the Atlanta Humane Society, from which Mac and Paulina adopted Boo. Mac’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the ICU Trauma Team at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center.
