Thomas Tate

Thomas (Tom) Tate passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025 at the age of 92 with his wife, Martha, by his side. He will be forever loved and never forgotten. Tom was born to Thomas J. and Lois (Smith)Tate in Sylacauga, Alabama.

He attended Auburn University and remained a loyal Auburn Tiger to the end. Actively engaged in campus life, Tom loved his Sigma Nu fraternity, working as business manager of the Glomerata Year Book, and running track on the team that won the SEC title in 1954. Upon graduation, Tom joined the U.S. Army where he became a Captain and taught in the flight school for three years.

Returning to Alabama, he was editor for the Talladega Reporter for two years before moving to Atlanta to work for the C&S National Bank from 1960-1965. In 1965 Tom was hired by the Hawn Foundation in Dallas, Texas to become the manager of the newly opened Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta, a position he enjoyed for seven years. Continuing his work with the Hawn Foundation, Tom entered real estate, brokering land deals in partnership for 25 years.

Tom was State Director of the Georgia Chapter of International Council of Shopping Centers, served on the Board of Directors for the Boys Club, Administrative board of Peachtree Road UMC, and was Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Auburn University School of nursing-a role near and dear to his heart.

He will be lovingly remembered as an encourager and supporter to his family and friends who were the primary sources of joy in his rich life. He is survived and cherished by his wife, Martha, daughter, Helen (Russell), and granddaughters, Linda (Harrison) and Laura. He is predeceased by his siblings Nita, Martha Jean, Mary Helen and survived by Frances and William (Bill).

A Memorial Service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church on Monday March 3rd at 3:00 with a reception at the church to follow.
