Sarah Louise Hill, 97, passed away on December 18, 2021. Aunt Sarah was born on November 1, 1924, in East Point, GA, to Edgar Cicero and Lallie Harris Hill, but spent most of her life in Atlanta, growing up blocks from Grant Park and residing in Sylvan Hills for years. Later she moved to Tucker and finally when she could no longer live alone, to Sandy Springs. Sarah graduated from Atlanta’s Commercial High School in 1942. Aunt Sarah never married; her 12 nieces and nephews were her children. Sarah resided in senior living centers the last six years of her life following a massive heart attack that left her unable to care for herself. Up until then, Sarah lived a full and functional life still driving and caring for herself as a 91-year-old.
Aunt Sarah was a businesswoman who spent many years in the finance industry. She was an active member of the Credit Professionals International of Atlanta where she held numerous officer positions such as Chaplin and head of the Finance Review Committee. In 1993 Aunt Sarah received recognition for thirty years perfect attendance in the club.
Aunt Sarah grew up in Grant Park Christian Church and later was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. As an active church member, Sarah at various times taught Sunday School, provided food when people were sick, and drove many miles each week to participate in a Bible study group. After moving to senior living, attending church on a regular basis became difficult, but Sarah was a regular in a Bible study group at Dunwoody Place Senior Living and on special occasions attended services at Mount Vernon Presbyterian.
Aunt Sarah loved to sew and crochet. Every Christmas nieces, nephews and eventually their children and grandchildren received stocking caps, scarves, and blankets. At 96 years of age, Aunt Sarah crocheted caps to keep preemies warm at Scottish Rite.
Sarah was preceded in death by her brother, Edgar Hill (Hilda), and by her sisters Harriett Barber (Harry), Marion Pace (Earl), Elizabeth Chaffin (LeRoy), and Jean Garland (Tom). She is survived by nieces and nephews James E. Pace, Jr. (Florence), Judy Merritt, Jim Barber (Grace), Pam Johnson, Cheryl Chasin (Joe), Janet Akerson (Randy), Linda Dodson (Mark), Carol Garland, Ronnie Chaffin (Jane), Steve Hill (Niana), Tim Hill (Kim), and David M. Hill (Christy).
A Celebration of Life service will be held at H.M. Patterson and Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel on January 4, 2022, at 2:00 PM with burial at Crest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Barrett Abernethy of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:30-1:30. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Sarah’s name to two of her favorite charities - Atlanta Mission and Christian City - or Seasons Hospice Foundation. Attendees are asked to wear masks.
