Samuel Nesbitt Evins, IV died February 13, at the age of 76 at his Atlanta home after a short illness. Sam was a member of a well-established Atlanta family as well as a member of the Highlands, N.C. community where his family maintained a summer home since early in the last century. Originally from Spartanburg, SC, the Evins family moved to Atlanta in the 1890’s where Sam’s grandfather established a law firm.
Sam was born in Atlanta on October 19, 1935 to Eleanor Maude and Samuel N. Evins III and lived in and around in Ansley Park in the early part of his life.
He attended Clark Howell Elementary School in Atlanta as well as Grady High School where he established many life long friendships. Sam completed high school at Darlington School in Rome, GA and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1958 where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity.
Sam is survived by his devoted wife, the former Susan Cochrane, with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in December. He is also survived by his brother Walter Preston Evins of Atlanta, GA and the couple’s four children, Eleanor A. Evins and her husband Paul Winch of Tampa, FL; Samuel N. Evins IV and his wife Penny of New Orleans, LA and their children Samuel N., VI and June Friend; Edward Cochrane Evins and his wife Cathy of Chicago, IL and Susan Arrington Evins of Atlanta, GA.
Sam spent his professional career in securities, and upon his retirement from Jefferies & Company, the couple spent the years enjoying their homes in Atlanta, Highlands, NC, and St. Simons Island, GA.
He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, The University of Georgia Alumni Association, The Highlands Biological Foundation, The St. Simons Land Trust, and The Piedmont Driving Club, where he was granted with a life membership.
He generously contributed to conservation projects both in St. Simons and Highlands. In addition to his many past times, such as sailing, Georgia football, and Atlanta baseball, he enjoyed his monthly luncheons with his high school contemporaries and treasured his membership in the Chi Phi Fraternity. He never missed the annual celebration of The Buckhead Boys in Atlanta. He will be missed by a legion of friends, relatives, and colleagues.
The memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Church at 435 Peachtree St. Friday, February 17 at 2:30 with a reception following. A private burial service will be held at Atlanta’s Historic Oakland Cemetery.
