Robert Matthew Smith, 92, of Fayetteville, GA passed away on January 21, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Robert moved extensively throughout his lifetime. Some of the many places he called home included Mineola, NY, Bradenton FL, Sarasota, FL, Jacksonville FL and finally Fayetteville, GA. Robert served in the US Army during WWII as a soldier in the 75th Infantry Division. After the war, he began a career in banking rising to the position of Assistant Vice President with First National City Bank (now Citibank). He retired in 1980 after a 30-year career. During his retirement, Robert traveled and volunteered with several organizations including the American Cancer Society, 75th Infantry Division Veterans Association and other local charities. He is survived by his loving wife, Caroline H. Smith of Fayetteville, GA; son Christopher Smith and daughter-in-law Mary, Fayetteville GA; daughter Stephanie O’Neil and son-in-law Rob, Charlotte NC; grandchildren Timothy Smith, Rebecca Smith, Rachel Smith, Addison O’Neil and Robbie O’Neil. Graveside services will be held Monday, January 30, 2017 at 2:00 PM at GA National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Sacred Journey Hospice, 138 Peach Drive, McDonough, GA 30253.
