Rex Bartlett Simms passed away on April 30th, 2017 in Atlanta surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was born August 5th, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to The Reverend Rex Clift Simms and Kathleen Wilson Simms. Rex is survived by his wife Joy Simms, brother Kent Simms, children Renee , Doug, George, Emily, grandchildren Sharon, Jamie, Shawn, Jessica, Eric, Colin, great grandchildren Jaxson and Caydence. Rex served in the Navy from 1953 until 1957. He graduated from University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science and Business degree and then went on to Georgia Tech and received a Master of Science and Engineering degree. Rex retired from Southern A&E Engineering when he was 80 years old. He was a devout member of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church for 60 years, serving on the vestry for over 30 years, and was the Jr. and Sr. Warden for numerous terms.Rex served for over 30 years as Treasurer of the Sexton Woods HOA. Rex had a very strong passion for music, singing in the church choir for over 60 years. He loved singing barbershop and was a member of the Sentimental Journey quartet. Rex also sang with the HeartStrings Choir. Rex played clarinet with New Horizons and Southern Winds Bands.Other organizations that Rex was affiliated with included: The Barbershop Harmony Society, The Pro- Mozart Society of Atlanta, The Atlanta Steinway Society, the Atlanta Music Club. Rex Simms’ presence was large in the greater Atlanta area and he was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The visitation will be Sunday May 7th from 4-6pm at HM Patterson and Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel The service will be held Monday May 8th at 10am at St. Martin in the Fields Church. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Martin's in the Fields or a charity of your choice.
