Ray (Raymond) Charles Warren, age 82, passed away on November 23, at home in Dunwoody, GA, after a multi-year battle with congestive heart failure. Ray was born on March 11, 1936 to the late Bill (Wilbur) and Betty (Elizabeth) Warren. They lived in Red Bank, New Jersey. After a short stint in the Army Signal Corps, he became a barber. In 1961 he married Jean Wenner of Fair Haven, NJ. They later moved to Neptune, NJ to raise their daughter and son. Ray owned barber shops in the Jumping Brook shopping center in Neptune and by Leisure Village in Lakewood, NJ. He was active in the community through Boy Scouting, the Police Reserves, the Republican Club, and anything having to do with his children. The family attended St. Michael’s Church in Wall Township, NJ where he served as Lay Reader and led children’s services.
In 1983, the family moved to Dunwoody, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. He initially worked in security at JC Penney and the Buckhead Ritz Carlton before returning to his roots at Embry Hills Barber shop in Chamblee, GA where he was a “tonsorial artist” until retirement in 2005. Ray was in the Kiwanis Club of North DeKalb-Dunwoody as an officer, volunteer reader at Kingsley Charter School, and K-Kids leader. He was active in the DeKalb and Georgia Republican Clubs where he held a number of offices; he also served on the US Selective Service Board for over twenty years. As a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Dunwoody, Ray served as head usher, Verger, and outreach minister to Brookrun GRC and Peachford Hospital. His hobbies included sports car rallies, woodworking, SCUBA diving, landscaping, and building model RC boats.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his older brothers Bud (John) and Bobby (Robert) Warren. Those Ray leaves behind to retell his jokes and share memories of his antics are: Jean, his wife of 57 years; daughter Kitt Holmes with husband Gene of Griffin, GA; son Tony Warren of Juneau, AK; granddaughter Katie Davis with husband Russ of Griffin, GA; granddaughter Mary Holmes of Griffin, GA; sister-in-law Evelyn Warren of Eatontown, NJ; brother-in-law Jim Wenner with wife Doris of Hot Springs, AR; and nieces and nephews from coast to coast.
A Memorial service with Eucharist will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 3:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dunwoody, GA. A reception with family visitation will follow. In honor of Ray’s sense of humor, guests are encouraged to wear colorful socks or ties and big smiles. In lieu of flowers, he has requested donations be made to the church designated for the Children’s Ministry.
H. M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
