She is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Doug McAlister, her daughter Maggie, son Tom, daughter-in-law Tamar and beloved grandchildren Margo, Miles and Julian. Siblings and in-laws include Julee and Tom Slaughter, Janice and Alan McAlister and Kate and Mike Kupstas—plus many special nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents Fannie and Tom Slaughter, in-laws Mary and Mac McAlister and brother and sister-in-law Wee-zee and John McAlister.
Born in Washington, D.C., Nancy was a gracious Southern lady and a legendary hostess with big-hearted, unstoppable charisma. She adored her children and grandchildren and would tell you about them anytime—illustrated by the photos she always carried in her purse. Friendly, funny and fiercely loyal, Nancy was a gifted storyteller and a natural performer. Throughout her life, she was also a compassionate supporter of sick, hungry and underprivileged children.
A service will be held at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta on Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial gifts to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Nancy’s name as a way to honor her generous spirit.
