

On Monday November 18, 2013, Mendel Romm, Jr. died peacefully surrounded by members of his family. Mendel was proud to be an Atlanta native, a UGA alumnus, an officer in the US armed services, a wonderful husband and father and a friend to thousands of people in Atlanta and beyond. Mendel enjoyed several accomplished careers in his lifetime… nightclubs, restaurants, real estate and insurance but was particularly satisfied with his work as a driver and escort for many nationally recognized authors when they came to Atlanta for book tours.
Mendel was a devoted member of the Temple and served as a long time member of its burial society. He served on the national young leadership cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal and was a successful fundraiser for many worthy Jewish causes.
He was a true person of the book who loved reading and collecting books over an eight decade life. He volunteered his time at Oakland Cemetery and the Breman Jewish Museum sharing his vast knowledge and love of Atlanta history
Mendel is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Anta Pitlick Romm, his children, Lisa Kepler, Dr Tracey Romm and his wife Dr. Aviva Romm, Amy Arogeti and her husband Robert Arogeti, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mendel was predeceased by his parents, Mendel Sr and Tootsie Romm, his brother Alfred and his son Charles “Chip”. Special thanks to Lisa P. for her love and care as Mendel’s caregiver over the past few years.
The funeral service will be held graveside on Wednesday November 20, 2013 at Crestlawn Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Rabbi Peter Berg and Cantor Deborah Hartman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mendel’s memory can be made to the Temple, The Breman Jewish Museum, Oakland Cemetery or to a charity of one’s choice.
