WALLACE, Laura Sauls of Atlanta died peacefully on January 17, 2019. She was born December 7, 1941 in Atlanta. She attended Morris Brandon School and then graduated from The Westminster Schools in the class of 1959. She went on to attend Sweet Briar College and the University of Geneva before ultimately graduating from the University of Georgia in 1963.
Following graduation, Laura worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, writing for the society pages. Shortly thereafter, she met her husband-to-be, John A. Wallace, who was a young lawyer then working with Hansell Post Brandon & Dorsey and later with King & Spalding for many years.
Laura was an avid gardener and became an active member of both the Cherokee Garden Club and the Sea Island Garden Group. She was also a member of the Mill Reef Club in Antigua, West Indies. Her father was one of the founders of what is now known as Piedmont Healthcare, and Laura became an active supporter of that organization as both a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Piedmont Hospital and a co-Chair of the Piedmont Ball in 1990. She was also a member of the Forward Arts Foundation.
Laura had a lifelong love of horseback riding that began with riding to Morris Brandon and continued later in life with numerous rides and visits with her beloved horse Oz on St. Simons Island, GA. She spent as much time as possible at her home on Sea Island, where she and John hosted many gatherings of family and friends. All who visited enjoyed quality time in her lush backyard garden. She also became an avid bridge player and competed in many bridge tournaments.
Laura is predeceased by her parents, the late Dr. H. Cliff Sauls and Betty Moseley Sauls and her sister, Caroline Sauls Shaw. She is survived by her husband of over 53 years, John A. Wallace, her three children, John A. Wallace, Jr., Laura Wallace Houghton, and Michael T. Wallace (Maggie), her six grandchildren, Kate Wallace, Claire Wallace, Henry Houghton, James Houghton, Michael Wallace Jr., and Jack Wallace, and her nephews, Alex C. Hitz and Thomas L. Shaw.
Visitation will be at H.M. Patterson & Sons at 1020 Spring St NW, Atlanta, GA 30309 on Tuesday, January 22nd from 5-7PM. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 3003 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 on Wednesday, January 23rd at 11:00AM, followed by a reception at The Piedmont Driving Club at 1215 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309 at 12:00PM. The family expresses its great appreciation for the loving kindness shown to Laura by Ms. Georgia Bell and Ms. Shirley Beckley.
