Joseph E. McDevitt passed away at his home in Dunwoody, on August 26, 2023, at the age of 97. He was born on October 31, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia, to A.J. and Helen Hanlon McDevitt. He grew up in the West End area of Atlanta. He graduated from Marist College, as it was known then, in 1943. He graduated form the University of Georgia in 1949, and the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1966. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired as an attorney from the U.S. Department of Agriculture after 25 years of service and prior to that was employed at Southern Bell.
An avid reader and historian, Joseph found great joy in exploring the pages of American history, with particular focus on the Civil War, World Wars I and World War II. Throughout is life, he was known for his remarkable gift of memory, and defined by his dedication and support to his cherished family. His great niece, Haley Reaves described "Uncle Joe Joe" as "always jolly."
He was predeceased by his father, mother and sister Mary McDevitt. He is survived by his sister Lorraine (Bert) Steele, niece Mary Beth (Al) Trembley, nephew Michael (Margaret) Steele, and great nieces Haley Reaves, Katie Reaves and Maggie Steele.
A funeral mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mt. Vernon Rd., Atlanta, GA on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at 2:00. Visitation with the family will occur at the church prior to the Mass. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home, 760 Pollard Blvd. SW, Atlanta, Ga, 30315
