Josephine (“Jo”) Lane Cheves Wright, died on October 11, 2014, from Lewy Body Dementia. Jo.Lane was born in Atlanta on September 7, 1930. She was the daughter of James P. “Buck” and Elizabeth Chumbley Cheves. She was named after her beloved Great Uncle Jo Lane Stern, former Adjutant General of the State of Virginia and student of Robert E. Lee at Washington University.
After graduating from North Fulton High School, Jo.Lane attended the University of Georgia where she was a Cheerleader for the Georgia Bulldogs as well as an active participant in UGA's Panhellenic Council and member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She also was a valuable team member of the UGA Dolphin Club (women's swim team) and the Hunter Club (women's equestrian team). She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1951 with an B.A. in English and immediately began to teach elementary school at the R. L. Hope school in Atlanta.
Jo.Lane married her high school sweetheart Howell “Franklin” Wright in 1950. The couple stayed in Atlanta where Franklin continued to work for the family business, the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant. The couple immediately began raising a family on Peachtree Battle Circle in a house built by Jo.Lane's father, Buck Cheves.
Jo.Lane was active throughout her entire life. In addition to successfully raising and providing a loving home to three children, she was actively engaged in creating and supporting many organizations in the City which she loved including the Cottage Garden Club, and of course the Holy Spirit Catholic Church from its initial creation in 1964. She was never long from a bridge game which was the one self indulgence she allowed herself in a lifetime of service.
Later in life she took the time to travel with friends and family to such places as China, Alaska, the Holy Land, Ireland and Mexico. Closer to home, she enjoyed going on overnight “Rambles” with friends to visit historical sights in support of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
Jo.Lane always put family and friends first, just behind God and Church. She was predeceased by her husband Franklin who died on January 11, 1999. Survivors include: sister Elizabeth Cheves Lee of Richmond, Va.; son Hal Wright and his wife Linda of Atlanta; daughters Courtney and her husband Kyle Jenks and Susan and her husband Ben Selman, all of Atlanta; grandchildren Rogan Wright, Preston Jenks Henry, Lane Jenks, Gail Jenks, Elizabeth Selman and Julia Selman; and great granddaughter Harper Henry.
A funeral mass be will held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on October 14 at 1:30 o'clock followed by a private family burial service at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. The family will receive friends at the home of Kyle and Courtney Jenks, 2748 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta Ga., 30327, from 6 until 8 o'clock on Monday, on Monday October 13, 2014.
