McIntyre, John C., died peacefully on Jan. 7 after an extended illness, surrounded by his family. He was 56. Born in Little Rock, Ark., John grew up and made his life in Atlanta, one of four children of Constance J. and Daniel W. McIntyre. He attended Christ the King Elementary School, St. Joseph’s High School, and Georgia State University, of which he was a graduate. As a boy, he shot backyard hoops with his brother Dan, whiled away summer afternoons at the duck pond and Gardens Hill pool, and enjoyed occasional visits to his father’s Knights of Columbus council. As a teenager, his most memorable job was as a record buyer for Peaches record store, where he could often be seen sporting a ponytail and pointing out his latest New Wave discoveries. He subsequently worked as a maintenance man at an apartment complex, and as a result of the skills he learned, he became known as “Mr. Fix-It.” In 1989, John married his beloved wife, Linda, and they had two children, Jack and Kate, to whom he was deeply devoted. John became a successful banker and commercial lending specialist, capping his career as a valued employee of Wells Fargo. Not only was he industrious, but he also had a sharp, analytical mind. He possessed a creative wit and clever sense of humor that he passed on to his children. He watched every Razorbacks game, while also making his living room the home of the Braves. John never missed a single ballgame of Jack’s or Kate’s, volunteering to coach their teams all the way through middle school. He was especially happy to drive the bus for Kate’s volleyball team and participate with the other dads on the “chain gang” for Jack’s football games. He was a connoisseur of amusement parks and roller coasters, which figured in many a family vacation. John was an enthusiastic member of the Krewe of Thoth parade where he threw beads every year at the Mardi Gras. John had an extraordinarily large network of close friends who will no doubt miss him dearly, as he was a careful and sympathetic listener. He had an engaging presence, and was reliable and steady. As a father, son, brother, spouse and uncle, he was loving and loyal. He was, at heart, a family man in the truest sense, dedicated to his wife and heavily involved in, and proud of, the academic and personal development of his children. He is survived by his spouse, Linda, and their children, Jack and Kate, and by his sisters, Cassie Couch of Atlanta and Monica McIntyre of New York. A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 12 Noon at The Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King. An interment will follow at Historic Oakland Cemetery with a reception immediately following at the Bell Tower. The family will receive friends Friday, January 15, 2016 from 6 until 8 o’clock in the evening at Patterson’s Spring Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in John’s memory to the Orr Brain Tumor Fund by donating on-line https://donate.piedmont.org. Kindly put “In Memory of John McIntyre” in the Tribute Information. Checks can be made payable to Piedmont Healthcare Foundation, c/o 2001 Peachtree Road, NE, Suite 400, Atlanta, GA 30309.
