Arrangements under the direction of H.M. Patterson JOHN TYE FERGUSON died peacefully on February 6th 2012. Born December 1, 1931, the Atlanta native was the son of the late Dr. Ira Alfred and Carolyn Tye Ferguson. He attended Fulton County schools (E. Rivers and North Fulton), received an A. B. degree from Emory University and a LLB degree from Harvard Law School, and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1953. Following service in the military, he was an assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia and represented numerous departments of State government including the Department of Public Safety and the Board of Regents. He then entered into the private practice of law, but also was an associate county attorney for Fulton County dealing with finance, elections, and economic development. He spent ten years in Pike County raising cattle while continuing his Atlanta law practice.
A life long Presbyterian, he was a deacon, and an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, and First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston. He was also active on the Presbytery level having served as a member of the Committee on Preparation for the Ministry for a number of years.
He was a member of Capital City Club, Atlanta Botanical Garden, High Museum of Art, and Zoo Atlanta. He was a current active member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Papy Ferguson; stepson, James E. Atkinson and his wife Beverly; niece, Carol Ferguson Weiss; and nephews, Ira A. Ferguson III, Gainesville, and Dr. Charles M. Ferguson and his wife Stacy of LaGrange, Ga.
Services will be held at North Avenue Presbyterian Church, Atlanta at 2pm on Feb.11th. No flowers please. Donations may be made to the Catherine and Andrew Purves Fund at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary or to the charity of your choice.Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com
