John Martin DeBorde, III died Friday, December 20, 2013 after an extended illness. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Anne Coggins DeBorde. He is survived by his children, Anne DeBorde Gaston (Jim), Laura DeBorde Henry (Brian), Elizabeth DeBorde Ramsey (Tom), Margaret Coggins DeBorde, and John Martin DeBorde IV (Sueyin). He was so proud of his 9 grandchildren – Laura Gower (Matthew), Will Gaston (Sarah), David Gaston, Lollie Owings (Pierce), Brice, John and Lee Anne Bradshaw and Kyler and Pailey DeBorde – and his 4 great grandchildren, Ryan, Evan and Reagan Gower and Henry Owings.
John was born November 19, 1926 in Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Boys’ High in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy for 2 years while attending college and graduated from Emory University in 1949 with a degree in business administration. He had a passion for the life insurance business and was devoted to his clients and their well-being. He was proud to win the President’s Trophy Award with The New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. John was a life member of the Piedmont Driving Club and Peachtree Golf Club. He served as a trustee of The Lovett School for many years starting with moving Lovett to its current location on Paces Ferry Road back in 1959.
John loved people, tennis, golf and Ponte Vedra Beach. He also leaves behind his beloved Alice McDonough, his brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Mary DeBorde and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Andrise, Bettye, Charles, Kemme, Monica and Thelma – and many others who have taken care of him over the years.
A service to celebrate the life of John DeBorde will be held at The Cathedral of St. Philip on Monday, December 23 at 10 AM. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. After a private interment service at Westview, they invite you to join them at Peachtree Golf Club.
