Joan W Tysinger, the daughter of James Wesley (Jim) Tysinger and Joann Tysinger passed away
Saturday, November 9, 2013. Though born in Wichita, Kansas in October of 1950, she always
considered herself a Georgia native.
Joan obtained her BA and MFA in Visual Arts from Georgia State University. She worked for GSU Art
Department until retirement. She also taught drawing and color theory at the Atlanta College of Art
and the Spruill Art Center.
Through her lifetime career as an artist, Joan took great joy in creating, teaching, and sharing her gift
of art. She continually pressed to explore new mediums through painting, drawing, graphic design,
and most recently video documentaries. Joan accepted no limitations of her goals.
Joan is predeceased by her parents, Jim and Joann Tysinger, and her companion Doug Jones.
She is survived by her sisters, Jan Siemens (John) and Meg Hartin; nieces Kate Siemens Rouse (Matt)
and Caroline Hartin; nephews Mike Siemens (Kari) and Jeff Hartin; great niece Elli Siemens;
stepmother Loretta Tysinger; stepbrother Young Smith (Janet); stepsister Rebecca Frey (Steve),
Harper Smith, Wesley Frey and Edward Frey.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, November 24 at 3:00 o’clock at HM Patterson and Sons
Spring Hill. Private family interment will be held at a later date.

charities that were meaningful to Joan: GSU Foundation Joseph Perrin Award which honors the GSU
Art Department chair who was a mentor to Joan, the Spruill Art Center where Joan taught, or the
