James Jasper Hamby died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in his home in Atlanta, Georgia. Jim was born on December 28, 1919, to Thelon and Vivian Hamby in Columbus, Georgia, the youngest of three children. Jim graduated from Columbus High School in 1935 and enlisted in the US 11th Air Force in 1941. He served four years during World War II in the North Pacific Campaign in Aleutian Islands, Alaska. After his service, he attended the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture. He was a member of the first ever graduating class for the Landscape Architecture program. After graduation, Jim met Ruth Jane Watts in Frankfort, Kentucky and they married in December of 1955. Jim and Jane raised their three children in Atlanta, Georgia and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last year. Jim loved the outdoors and was passionate about nature and landscape design. He worked for the U.S. Government in Housing Urban Development until he retired in 1989. He took great pride in designing and maintaining his own beautiful yard, enjoyed by his children and grandchildren for years. Jim was an active member of Second Ponce deLeon Baptist Church and the EEE Sunday school class. He volunteered at the Family Life Center at Second Ponce for twelve years. His family is incredibly grateful for the many years they have known Jim Hamby as husband, “Daddy”, and “Papa”. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his wife Jane Watts Hamby of 63 years; children Jay Hamby, Sara Hamby Rives Spickler (Doug Spickler), Kathy Hamby Carter (Stephen Carter), five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Memorial service will be held Friday, July 27 at noon at Second Ponce deLeon Baptist Church chapel followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
