Harry Clay Draughon Jr, 80, a native of Atlanta Georgia, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday March 7, 2018. He is, as Billy Graham so beautifully said, "more alive than ever before" and has simply "changed addresses".
Harry Jr, was born on August 14, 1937 to his parents Harry Clay and Jennelle Copeland Draughon in Atlanta Georgia. An excellent student at Murphy High School, Harry continued his education at both Emory University and Georgia Technological Institute receiving a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Georgia Tech.
Eager to serve his country, Harry received a commission in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis and at least one Tour in Vietnam.
Harry married Virginia Ann Nash of Charleston South Carolina in December 1965, that covenant producing two children, Beth Melinda, and David Clay. Harry Jr was a devoted and loving husband for 52 years and continued in his devotion to Christ and care and love for his wife and children until his final days.
Harry served for many years as a Deacon at his local church and also as a Gideon. He enjoyed singing alongside his wife in his church choir and the two of them even performed together in various productions including Ahmal and the Night Visitors. He volunteered in local school programs bringing life to various concepts in Physics for students and will long be remembered as an unrelenting wordsmith with an interminable passion for his creation of Fun with Words.
Harry Clay Draughon Jr is survived by his wife Virginia of Peachtree City Georgia, two Children, B. Melinda Smith and her husband Douglas of Glastonbury Connecticut, David Draughon of Lorton Virginia, one grand daughter, Annabeth Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach Florida, two sisters, Donna Cowart and her husband Richard of Port Orange Florida and Gail Draughon of Atlanta Georgia, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be dearly missed by all.
A service honoring his life will be held Tuesday, March 13 at 12pm at Patterson’s Spring Hill
