Frances Towns Smith

Frances was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 12, 1922 to George Thomas Towns and June Rollins Towns.

She grew up in Dunwoody, Georgia with her brother Newbert Thomas Towns and sister, Clara Mae Caldwell. While attending Chamblee High School, Frances met and fell in love with William Mack Smith.

They married on Christmas Eve 1940 and created a beautiful family together. Mack and

Frances raised their family in Brookhaven, Georgia where they owned and operated Mack

Smith’s Red Dot Food Store on Dresden Drive. Their son, Larry, and daughter, Joyce, were part

of the family business after school each day. They enjoyed a childhood full of special memories

with their mother: counting unusual coins, enjoying a Coke from the ice box, stocking the

shelves, filling and delivering grocery orders for the neighborhood, and jumping into the family

pool at the end of the day. Frances was an exemplary baker, card player, and Grandmother.

Over the years, her family expanded to include four grandchildren and six great grandchildren,

all of whom cherish sweet moments spent with her on family beach and lake vacations, baking

biscuits and chocolate chip cookies, and watching the 11 o’clock news in the sunroom. She had

a joyful laugh and never complained. She was a gracious Southern lady and a follower of God’s

word. Although she was small in stature, she was fearless and strong, never seeking praise

from others. Frances was a member of the University Baptist Church and Brookhaven Baptist

Church. Over 58 years of marriage, Mack and Frances consistently modeled a marriage that

was built on true love, mutual respect, and putting the other first. She celebrated Mack’s love of

real estate and golf and Mack lovingly cared for Frances’ every need until his death on January

2, 1998. Today, the legacy of Frances and Mack Smith will live on through their family that

honors their ideals of following God’s word, loving family, and giving to their community.

Frances is pre-deceased by her husband, William Mack Smith, and her son William Mack Smith, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Larry Wayne Smith (Jan Smith), daughter, Joyce Smith Sorrow (Dennis

Sorrow), four grandchildren: Kimberly Campbell (Ted Campbell), Brad Brown (Stephanie

Brown), Brent Smith (Courtney Smith), and Ashley McCann (Jeffrey McCann), six

great-grandchildren: Teddy Campbell, Rion Brown, Caroline Campbell, Beecher Brown, Chloe

Campbell, McKenna McCann, and one great-grandson, Bowen Wayne McCann, due in

November.

The family will host a visitation on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 12:00 PM at H.M.

Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. Visitation will be followed by a burial service at

Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs at 2:00 PM.
