Evelyn was born on October 29th, 1933, in Tampa, Florida, the daughter of James Baskin Mason and Lillian Morris Mason. In 1953, Evelyn, an Agnes Scott student, married Georgia Tech student Tom Newberry, and they were married for 64 years. In fact, July 25th would have been their 65th wedding anniversary, and we’re thinking she left to spend it with him.
Giving to others was Evelyn’s specialty. She was so generous that if you told her you liked her jacket, she would take it off and give it to you. No one ever left the house empty-handed and without a reminder from the front porch to drive safely. The Christmas season was her favorite time of year.
A Braves game always made her day brighter. M&Ms were her cure of choice. And she absolutely adored their place at the beach.
Evelyn and Tom, each only children, were blessed with a large family—5 children, 17 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Tom preceded her in death by only a few months, and she is survived by her children Cynthia Newberry Martin (Cal) of Columbus; Suzanne Newberry Murphy (Chuck) of Athens; Jennifer Newberry Griscom (Billy) of Atlanta; Elizabeth Mason Newberry of Atlanta; and Thomas Lee Newberry V (Kristin) of Atlanta. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kathleen McDowell Levens (Sam); Robert Calhoun Martin III (Claire); James Mason Martin; Samuel Thomas Martin; Anne Murphy Karabell (Jacob); Carden Lynn Griscom; William Caleb Griscom (Colleen); Peter Van Dyke Griscom (Brooke); Jennifer Griscom Smith (Joel); Thomas Matthew Griscom; Elizabeth Ashley Irvin.; James Clay Irvin, Jr.; Suzannah Lilly Irvin; Charlotte Mason Irvin; Thomas Lee Newberry VI ; Mason Alexander Newberry; Brooks Donaldson Newberry; and great-grandchildren—Charles, Lillian, Evelyn, Robert, Rebekah, Grayson, Lilly, Emmeline, and William.
The family is grateful to her caregivers for the loving, compassionate care they gave her. Thanks forever to Hendrix Mumba, and special thanks to Merina Chiwala, and Lindah Ngandu Bwalya.
Evelyn was a member of Peachtree Christian Church and contributed to numerous philanthropic causes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
