Dong Qin was born in Shanghai to Qizong Qin and Qike Zheng on December 3, 1967. She went to school in Shanghai. She married Younan Xia on August 9, 1995 in Santa Clara, California. She was a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, with an adjunct appointment in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her academic records include a B.S. from Fudan University, a Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania, a postdoctoral stint at Harvard University, and an MBA from the University of Washington. Before joining the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2012, she held administrative positions as Associate Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis and Associate Director of Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Washington. She is widely recognized for her many original contributions to the rational synthesis of nanomaterials with novel properties. She also pioneered a set of in situ techniques for the characterization of atomic/molecular events on the surface of nanomaterials in a liquid phase and under operando conditions. She served as an Associate Editor of Nanoscale and was elected a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry. As a passionate and inspirational teacher, she received multiple Teaching Excellence Awards from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In recent years, she developed strong interests in photography, gardening, playing piano, and hiking.
Dong Qin was preceded in death by Qizong Qin (father).
Dong Qin is survived by Younan Xia (spouse), Qike Zheng (mother), and Fawn Wang (sister).
Funeral/memorial serves will be held at 2 pm on December 11, 2023, at H. M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, with visitation starting at 1 pm.
