David Lee Smith, a proud native son of Georgia, passed away on August 21, 2015. Lee is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cary Fleming-Smith, mother Sandra Greer Smith, her friend George Graves, sister Marty McCarty, her husband Dwayne, brother Andrew Smith and his wife Carmen, niece Kristen Mims, nephews Elisha Bagby, Greer Smith, Hunter Smith, Miles Smith, stepmother Ann Smith, and brother/sister-in-law Stephen and Cissa Fleming. He was preceded by his father, William David Smith, grandparents Robert L. and Margaret Greer, and great-grandmother Lilly Lockhart Middlebrooks.
Lee, 55, a native of Macon, graduated from Central high school (member of Sedarmoc fraternity), the University of Georgia and Atlanta Law School. He practiced law in his adopted hometown of Atlanta for 22 years. Lee loved reading, especially southern American and world history, playing golf, traveling, trains, the outdoors, and talking with his friends at the Carl Sanders YMCA. He especially enjoyed spending time with his niece and nephews whom he took to swimming holes in north Georgia and travelled with them to Yellowstone National Park, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and various beaches and rivers in Texas.
He loved watching the Georgia Bulldogs. He was a student at the University of Georgia in 1980 when the Bulldogs won the national championship behind Herschel Walker, and he and his brother would travel to at least one away game each season in addition to watching and discussing each week's game endlessly.
But more than anything he loved his family. He was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend, who was loved and will be missed by all those who loved and knew him.
A memorial service will be held at H. M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, Atlanta on Wednesday, August 26 at 4 o'clock.
In lieu of flowers ,the family requests that donations be made in Lee's name to the John Ritter Foundation on Aortic Health.
