ALLEN LAMAR COWART, Jr. of Big Canoe, Georgia, passed away on Saturday November 29, 2014. He was born March 2, 1946 in Edison, Georgia, the son of Allen Lamar Cowart, Sr. and Ann McTyer Cowart. Allen is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynn Hamilton Cowart, his son Christopher Allen Hunter and wife Susan Beauregard Hunter of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his son Scott McTyer Cowart and wife Sydney Cooke Cowart of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Surviving grandchildren are: Arya, Kahlan, Sawyer Hunter, Courtney Beauregard, and Aurora Cowart. Surviving siblings are Jane Cowart Peer and Carol Cowart Bristol of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by his beloved Golden Retriever, Clyde.
Allen grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where he attended The Bolles School and Lee High Schools. He later attended South Georgia College and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1968. Allen was a proud fraternity brother of Pi Kappa Alpha. He was also a Freemason, and 32nd degree Shriner. Allen served four years in the Air Force, which included a tour of Udorn, Thailand during the Vietnam War. After running the Cowart Brother’s Lumber Company in Jacksonville, he worked for New York Life Insurance, making the 'Million Dollar Round Table' during his first year of employment. He later enjoyed a robust career within the Personnel Services Industry as an Area Director with Norrell and Express Personnel Services.
Allen was a die-hard UGA Bulldog fan until the end. His wife and sons plan to fulfill his request to mix some of his ashes in a Bourbon and Coke and sprinkle them atop the hedges of Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. Go Dawgs!
A memorial service will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Jacksonville on December 13th at 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
