Kirven was born September 19, 1956 in Columbus GA, second child and oldest son of the late Dr. Albert Kirven Gilbert Jr. and the former Frances Rebecca Pearce both of Columbus. He married Laurie Ann Black on June 9, 1984 in Columbus.
Kirven graduated from Brookstone School in Columbus in 1974. He went on to earn a BA from Vanderbilt University, an MBA from Georgia State University, and a JD from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University.
Kirven worked over 25 years as a corporate attorney for Bellsouth, took early retirement when it was acquired by AT&T, and was in his 8th year as a corporate attorney with Cox Communications.
He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Cherokee Country Club. He grew up as a tennis player, played tennis and soccer in high school, and became an avid golfer after college. Kirven enjoyed some of the best golf courses in the world including Pebble Beach and the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.
Above all, Kirven was a family man. He was a loving and devoted husband, a dad without equal, and a treasured source of strength and wisdom for his entire extended family. Whether traveling, golfing, or judging fine whiskeys, more than anything, he just wanted to be with the family and friends who he loved so much and who loved him back.
Kirven is survived by his wife Laurie, his daughter Mary Rebecca Ramseur and her husband Ryan Ramseur of Atlanta and his son Dr. Albert Kirven Gilbert IV of Atlanta GA, by his mother Rebecca Pearce Duggan of Columbus, by his sister Susan Virginia Gilbert and her husband Ron Marsh of Cape San Blas FL by his brother Murphy Pearce Gilbert and his wife Sabina Gilbert of Charleston SC, by his stepsisters Julie Duggan of Tallahassee FL, Cina Duggan Smith and her husband Andy Smith of Mountain Rest SC, Mary Stanley Casadonte and her husband Tony Casadonte of Atlanta, and Elizabeth Duggan Alford and her husband John Alford of Tallahassee FL, by his brothers-in-law Edgar Chancellor and his wife Kathy Chancellor of Columbus and Gregory Black of San Francisco CA, and by his sisters-in-law Linda Black Walsh and her husband Joseph Walsh of Sparta NJ and Jane Addison of Essex UK. As host to countless Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other family gatherings, Kirven was an adored uncle to his 5 nieces and 9 nephews.
Kirven was predeceased by his father Dr. Albert Kirven Gilbert Jr., by his grandparents Albert Kirven Gilbert Sr. and Julia Hartpence Gilbert and Murphy Artis Pearce and Jeffie Perkins Pearce, by his sister Rebecca Gilbert Chancellor, and by his stepfather Carlton Stanley Duggan.
A graveside service will be at noon Saturday, June 17 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. Following the burial, a memorial service will be at 2:00PM at H. M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill Chapel in Atlanta with a reception following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
