A native of LaGrange, GA, Mr. Hairston was the son of the late William H Hairston Sr and Annie Pete Holston and was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Hatton Hairston and sisters, Liz Candler and Julia Gilmore. He attended Center School in Troup County and graduated from Auburn University in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Hairston went to work for Georgia Power in 1947 and relocated to Athens where he retired as a transmission engineer. He served as a flight instructor on B-24 and B-29 aircraft in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He enlisted in the United States National Guard in 1948 as a Platoon Leader and was promoted to Captain in 1954. He then enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in 1957 and retired as a Major in 1978. Mr. Hairston was an active member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons, William H Hairston III and wife, Ann of Athens and Ben L Hairston and wife, Melody of Athens; daughter, Martha Fowler and husband, Don of Ellijay, GA; grandchildren, Kimberly Smith, Tyler Hairston, Renee Stauffer, Sally Farnham, and Kelly Hairston; 7 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Friday, August 24th at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev Carey Gibson officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday, August 23rd at Bernstein Funeral Home.
