Tom was born in Elberton to the late George L. and Susie Perry Yeargin and graduated from Elbert County High School. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force, where he worked in communications, retiring in 1977. Upon his retirement, he moved to Athens and began his second career as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church and the Philomathea Masonic Lodge #25 in Elberton. Tom enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, his brother, Ronald Yeargin and his sisters Margaret Brown and Wadene Calhoun preceded Tom in death.
Tom is survived by his wife, of 65 years, Margaret Woods Yeargin, Athens; children, Randy L. Yeargin and his wife, Mary of Winterville; Paula Y. Mooney and her husband, Lowell of Statesboro; and Beverly Powell and her husband, Scott of Athens; sister, Brenda McMullan and her husband, Gene of Dewy Rose; sister-in-law, Annette Yeargin of Elberton; grandchildren, Kayla Yeargin, Wade Powell and his wife, Raeney; Jessica DiGiovanna and her husband, Matt; Kimberly Moores and her husband, Mike; Sarah DuRant and her husband, Andrew; Christopher Mooney; and Kyle Yeargin; great-grandchildren, Miles DiGiovanna and Luke Thomas Moores; many nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, April 24, 2023 in Bernstein Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2023 in Tuckston United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. John Brown and Reverend William Jackson officiating. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
Burial will be held privately in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
