Born in 1946, my mother attended Spring Street School (now known as the Center for Puppetry Arts) in Atlanta and later transferred to Rosemead School in Littlehampton, West Sussex, England. After graduating from Rosemead School she returned to Atlanta to earn her Bachelor of Art History degree from Georgia State University.
My mother was passionate about art, dance, and fashion. She was an accomplished painter and loved drawing. She was a ballet dancer for many years with Southern Ballet in Atlanta, and her interest in fashion led her to be selected to the J. P. Allen Teen Board.
Stephanie Farlow was also an avid tennis player and in her spare time found great pleasure in volunteering for the local hospital when she lived in New Orleans. Her dedication to helping others at the hospital led her to being selected as the President of the Hospital Auxiliary.
My mother also started a British import retail store in Atlanta called The Rose and the Thistle. The store was a tremendous success for many years drawing both local and visiting British shoppers alike longing for original clothing and gifts from England.
I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend so much time with my mother and believe it is because of my time watching her helping others in the hospital in New Orleans that I too find great happiness when I help others in my community.
Her parents, Milton “Muggsy” Smith and Marie Smith, her husband, Gerald Buron Farlow, and her brother, Scot Smith, preceded my mother in death. Her sister, Meredith Daniels, and her son, Ian Farlow and his wife, Lisa Farlow, survive her.
