Robert L Fields

On Monday, July 25, 2011, Robert L. Fields returned home to Heaven. Mr. Fields was born to the late John and Pearl Fields of Madison County in 1927. In 1950, Mr. Fields married his beloved wife Mary Sue Kidd, and in 2010, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised their children Connie and David in Clarke and Madison Counties. Mr. Fields was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed by all the members of his family.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Fields’ patriotism led him to join the Navy where he served his country in the Second World War, Korean War and later in the Coast Guard Reserve. He spent the majority of his career working for Chevron USA, retiring in 1991 as the manager of pipeline terminal in Athens.

Mr. Fields was passionate about serving his Savior through the Gideons International and jail ministries. For the 50 years during which he was a member of the Gideons, he eagerly witnessed to countless individuals and unrelentingly handed out Bibles at college campuses, hotels, hospitals, and schools. Mr. Field’s zeal to spread the gospel of salvation to inmates, led him to start a jail ministry in Madison County. Together with his wife Sue, he witnessed and spread the love of Jesus to numerous inmates for years until his voice became faint and too weak to be heard. Mr. Fields also served as a Christian Youth Crusade (CYC) counselor for 18 years, and was a devoted deacon and a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

In his younger days, Bob’s enthusiasm for music and spreading the Gospel came through in his performances with the southern gospel men’s quartet, Southern Rhythm. Bob performed with the quartet on the radio and in surrounding counties.

Mr. Fields’ death is preceded by his eldest daughter Connie Hull’s in 2002. He leaves behind his wife Sue, his son David, his daughter-in-law Lisa, and their three children – Joshua, Lori, and Jake. He also leaves behind his son-in-law Cary Hull and his eight children – Amy, Christopher, Mary Catherine, Jonathan, David, Rachel, Andrew, and Joseph. His three great-grandchildren – Samantha, Haley, and Brady – as well as his sister Marcelle Smith and several nieces and nephews also survive him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, from 10-11 AM at Prince Avenue Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, also at Prince Avenue. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cecil Smith, Christopher Hull, George Paul, Jake Fields, Joshua Fields, and Olan Miller. The honorary pallbearers are the members of the Gideons International, and the deacons of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.
