A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Carter was the son of the late Thomas Franklin Carter and Fanny Loney Smith Carter and was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Pledger Carter. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and retired from the Athens-Clarke County Water Works Department as superintendent. Mr. Carter was a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Eddie Carter and wife, Marcia of Athens; brothers, William David Carter of Cullman, AL and Dr. Robert Newton Carter of Smiths, AL; sister, Fannie Bell Pruitt of Lexington; granddaughter, Melissa Spurlock of Brinson, GA, and great-grandsons, Scott Hatcher, Ian Spurlock, and Macky Spurlock.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Thursday, December 8th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Purdy officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Wednesday, December 7th at Bernstein.
