Paul Carroll Holmes was born in Detroit on June 21, 1925 to the late Eric and Florence Holmes and passed away in Athens on July 20, 2023. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Holmes, as well as three children: sons, Robert Carroll Holmes, Steven Paul Holmes and daughter, Deborah Holmes Seerley; and a grandson, Robert Matthew Tyner. His brother, Eric Holmes; and sister, Mary Jean Ashley, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Tyner (Ty); grandchildren: Jennifer Tyner Aspinwall, Alex Holmes (Jennifer), Erin Holmes Abel (Trent), Spencer Holmes (Maggie) and Bobby Holmes, as well as ten (10) great-grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
Paul served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines. He was also a member of 75 years at Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church. He served in various capacities at the church. He was self-employed for 40 years.
Paul and Gwen were fortunate to travel to the Holy Land, London, Ireland, and Austria. These trips were very special times for them. They also enjoyed sports together, especially following the Georgia Bulldogs.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 23, at 2:00 p.m., at the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
