Pamela Bradley Kleiber, 67, of Athens, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, September 24th at her home with members of her family at her side. Her passing marked the end of a courageous, almost three-year long battle with cancer. “Pam” was preceded in death by her parents, James Cushman Bradley and Barbara Jane Anderson Bradley, as well as a younger brother, James Anderson “Buck” Bradley, and her mother-in-law, Dorothy Douglas Kleiber. Born in Iowa, she grew up in New Orleans, Denison, TX and Chatham, NJ before going on to Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY where she met her future husband, Douglas Alfred Kleiber. She graduated from IC in 1969 with a triple major in English, History and Philosophy.
Pam and Doug were married on August 30, 1969 in New York City and moved to Austin, TX where their first child, Monica Lee “Molly” was born. Their academic careers sent them back to Ithaca for a short time and to St. Cloud, MN, where their second child, Ryan Bradley, was born, and then twelve years in Champaign, IL, before settling in Athens in 1989. In Athens, Pam received masters and doctoral degrees in Adult Education from the University of Georgia and held positions in the University’s College of Education and Center for Continuing Education before joining the Honors Program, serving as Associate Director of the Honors Program and Director of the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities before retiring in 2011.
Those who knew Pam, even for a short time, knew that her soul and spirit were as gentle and as beautiful as her physical appearance and that throughout the many career positions she held and the numerous charitable, civic and community involvements to which she gave her time, expertise and passion, the resounding themes of her life were children, education and art. “Touch the Harp Gently,” was her grandfather’s advice, which she passed along to her loved ones. She is further remembered by a favorite family prayer:
“O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.
Pam is survived by Doug, her husband of forty five years, Molly (and Tyler) Talley, Ryan (and Emily Lyke) Kleiber, seven grandchildren - Sarah Louise “Sally” O’Steen, Katharine Grace “Kate” Kleiber, Benton James Kleiber, Rhodes Douglas Kleiber, James Bradley “Buck” Talley, Elizabeth Jane “Bess” Talley, all of Athens, GA, and George Tyler “Tripp” Talley, III of Valdosta, GA - as well as her brother, Steven Douglas Bradley and his family of Littleton, CO, and her father-in-law, Paul Jacob Kleiber of Auburn, NY.
A service is planned for Sunday, September 28, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, Athens, GA at 7:30p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Pamela Bradley Kleiber Scholarship Fund c/o UGA CURO Program, Moore College, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602 or the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, 199 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.
