Nora was born October 2, 1925, to George T. Burriss and Jane Burriss. She grew up in East Point with her parents and four brothers. Nora had been working in Atlanta for several years following graduation from Russell High School when she met her future husband, George Mitchell, at a USO dance in Atlanta. They married in 1947, and Nora spent many happy years as a Navy wife. Nora, George, and their three children: Gerry, Nancy, and George Thomas traveled to wherever George was stationed. They saw the world. George retired in 1972 from the Navy and the family moved to Athens. Nora worked for Rutland Center in Athens, and later transferred to the mental health division for the State of Georgia in Athens. George became a schoolteacher and also worked for Paul Brown Motors. Nora retired from the State of Georgia in 2005 with over 35 years of service. Their daughters and son graduated from the University of Georgia.
Nora moved to Tucker in 2011 to be near family, but she knew she would return to her beloved Athens to be buried next to her husband, George, who died in 1991.
Nora will be remembered as a joyful, faithful, happy, generous and grateful person. She thanked God every day for her family, her good health, and longevity. She loved being a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. Nora felt blessed by God for her wonderful life. Her family misses her and will always honor her memory.
Nora is survived by daughters: Geraldine Mitchell of Tucker and Nancy Rivers of Houston, Texas; son, George Thomas Mitchell of Decatur; granddaughter, Jennifer Roeser of Houston, Texas; grandson-in-law, Dennis Roeser of Houston, Texas; grandson and fiancée, Zachary Rivers and Rebecca Sausville of Rahway, New Jersey; great-granddaughters: Ellie Roeser and EviKate Roeser of Houston, Texas; brother, James Cooper Burriss of Carrollton; and nieces: Cathy Burriss Gragg and Deborah Howell.
