On March 18, 2018, Mavis Nunnally Allgood went to be with her Lord and Savior. Mrs. Allgood was born to Joe Putnam and Mabel Bond Nunnally on December 7, 1922. She gave her life to the Lord at age 12 at Bogart Baptist Church. She was educated in the Clarke County Schools and graduated from University High School in 1939. She attended the University of Georgia.
She was married to James Webster Allgood on December 24, 1947. He preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by three brothers: Joe Watson, Travis and Gilbert Nunnally as well as her sister, Carolyn Hill Bradberry and son-in-law, Larry Hancock.
Mavis retired from the University of Georgia where she was secretary in Graduate Studies Education and later Secretary to the Dean in the School of Pharmacy. She volunteered at Barnett Shoals Elementary School and worked for the IRS in Taxpayer Services.
She was a longtime member of Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church serving as Sunday School teacher in the Co-Workers and Friendly Crusaders classes. She served in many capacities in the United Methodist Women and was their president at Young Harris as well as president of the Athens Elberton District. In addition, she was president of Church Women United in 1996 and was named their Valiant Woman. She organized and directed many Vacation Bible Schools for underprivileged children.
She is survived by her loving children and their spouses: Mavis Lisa Bryant (John W.), Margie Hancock, James “Jim” Webster Allgood Jr. (Monnie) and Jeffrey Joe Allgood (Kelly); grandchildren: Jay Hancock, Scott Hancock, Mandy Thornton (Craig), Justin Allgood (Crystal), Jessica Cook (Macky), Web Allgood, Trevor Allgood, Brady Allgood and Ava Allgood; great-grandchildren, Derek Hancock, Mara Hancock, Camila Thornton, Miles Thornton, Mack Cook IV, Mackenzie Cook, Mackylie Cook, Grayson Allgood and Lucas Allgood; nieces, Barbara Sims, Connie Wheeler, Greta Newton, Jeannette Wilson and Mary Jane Heck; nephews, Bill Nunnally and Wesley Nunnally.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 22 at 3 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home with Reverend David Wofford officiating. Visitation will be before the service at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park.
