On December 31, 2023, Mary Catherine Berghuis Hines joined her parents, George and Anna Berghuis in Heaven. Also there to meet her were her sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Bill Wiley and her brother John J. Berghuis. Mary was born on St. Valentine's Day in 1928 in Eustis, Florida and spent most of her life there spending time with her many cousins and friends. In 2013, she moved to Georgia to live with the love of her life, her son Jim and his wife Kathy, who survive her. She ran the house for them doing all the cooking, ironing and tending the garden. They also went on many wonderful adventures together. She is also survived by her three precious grandchildren, Jimmie and Tanya Hines, Karen and Jason Maahs and Brian and Michelle Hines along with 10 amazing great-grandchildren, all who called by the name she loved—Grandma.
Mary was an excellent seamstress and crafter. She loved making quilts, baby blankets and booties. She crocheted many Christmas snowflakes, crosses, and intricate dollies. She participated in numerous local craft fairs and had many repeat customers over the years. But even more importantly was a lifelong devoted Catholic woman who loved her Lord Jesus. Missing mass was not an option and even after no longer being able to attend in person, she watched mass every Sunday.
The family would like to say an extra special thank you to the staff at Home Instead and Compassus Hospice who all loved her and helped us care for Mary. We could not have done it without you.
A joyous celebration of Mary's wonderful life will be held at a later date. Her final resting place will be in the mausoleum at Evergreen Memorial Park that will be shared with Jim and Kathy. Together forever Mom.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
