Born in Kentucky, Mr. Van Horn was the son of the late Delphia Marie Wilson. He was a proud graduate of Morehead State University and served in the United States Air Force, the United States Army and the United States Coast Guard. Following military service, he embarked on a career in the insurance business starting in Atlanta and later continuing his career in Athens. In his spare time, Mr. Van Horn enjoyed fishing.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Martin Charles “Chuck” Van Horn Jr. and a grandson, Jonathan McKenzie.
Survivors include daughter, Dru Gilman of Watkinsville; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Jeff Solomon of Athens; daughter-in-law, Lisa Van Horn of Acworth; grandchildren: Christy Georges (Chris), Michael Van Horn (Sylvia), T.L. Gilman, Taylor Solomon MacFalda (Garrett) and Morgan Solomon (fiancé Hale Johnson); six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 16, at 11:00 a.m., at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Arbor Terrace and Agape Hospice for their loving care.
