A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Shook was the daughter of the late Julius and Sarah Lowe, the 14th of 14 children and last surviving sibling. She was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.
Lillian had a long and distinguished career at The University of Georgia, retiring in 1986 after 33 years. She was notably Secretary and Assistant to several Deans of the Arts and Sciences School.
Mrs. Shook was preceded in death by her husband and father of her three children, Hoke Lester; husband, Herbert Shook and husband, Alfred McElroy. Also preceding her in death was her daughter, Linda Blanchard; son-in-law, John Blanchard; son, Ronnie Lester; and daughter-in-law, Gail Lester.
Survivors include her son, Wayne Lester, daughter-in-law, Cindy Lester; grandchildren: Dr. Elizabeth Johnson (Michael), Dr. Cynthia Shepherd (Brad), Kevin Lester, and Kelly Lester; great-grandchildren: Cole Johnson, Lily Ashton Johnson, Emory Shepherd, John Parker Shepherd, Zach Lester and Josh Lester; the Shook family: stepdaughters: Trudy Hancock and Von Bird; grandchildren: Susan Tolbert, Mike Hancock, Leslie O’Neal and David Whitehead; the McElroy family: Pat Bennett, Wayne McElroy and Brenda Ingram; and many nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 11, at 3:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens with the Reverend Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
