Born in Athens, John Curtis was the son of Michael Curtis Pruett and Susan Traci Pruett of Athens. He was a graduate of Georgia College and State University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in outdoor education.
John Curtis always loved the outdoors and threw his formidable enthusiasm, perseverance, and talent into everything he did. Among his many interests were mountain biking, fly fishing, snow skiing, camping, and backpacking. His greatest passions, however, were whitewater kayaking and rock-climbing. In his typical fashion, he constantly studied, researched, and practiced until he became a master at both.
His intellectual accomplishments were equally impressive. Though diagnosed with dyslexia in elementary school, he graduated with honors from Athens Academy and found his passion for learning in college. He loved his professors at GCSU and they loved him, asking him to serve as a project leader and a teaching assistant in numerous classes. He received a top grade on his history senior thesis and was anxious to expand it one day.
John Curtis’s greatest asset, however, was the biggest and most tender heart any person ever had. His smile lit up a room, and his laugh was quick and genuine. Taking care of other people and making them feel good about themselves was his top priority, and he did it instinctively. If his sister was hurt, he hurt for her. When his parents wanted to tag along on his adventures, he included them with enthusiasm and no hint of self-consciousness. He deeply felt everything the world had to offer, both the sadnesses and the joys.
John Curtis was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Curtis Pruett and his maternal grandparents, Susan West Chandler and Gerald Porter.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Kerrigan Pruett Crawford (Tyler); and his paternal grandmother, Virginia Sikes Pruett.
