Janet Grier McPherson died peacefully at home on Monday, August 12, 2013. She was born January 13, 1944, in Athens. She was the daughter of the late Helen and John McPherson, niece of Bess and Bill Hopkins, Harvey and Ann Cabaniss, and Robert and Margaret McPherson.
Janet graduated from Athens High School in 1962 and the University of Georgia in 1966 (ABJ in Journalism), where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Upon graduation, Janet boldly took off to New York City, initially working for Look Magazine. She then worked in the travel industry for more than 20 years. Her love of travel and adventurous spirit took her all over the world, with frequent visits to her favorites, Australia and Scotland.
She returned to Athens in 2001 to live and care for her mother and worked at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia until her death. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Road Runners, Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery, and the Athens Historical Society.
She is survived by two sisters, Helen McPherson Costantino (Mark) and Margaret McPherson Smith (Don), three nieces and a nephew, Lisa Costantino Hurley, Catherine Costantino Willard, John Costantino, and Fleming Smith, and six grand-nieces and nephews and many loving cousins.
Janet’s greatest passions were travel, reading, family and friends, and especially her beloved dog Angus, 17, who recently preceded her in death. She loved Athens and her Athens High School Class of 1962, and she took great pleasure in their many reunions and gatherings. Her last night was spent happily with some of those AHS friends.
Family and friends remember Janet for her zest for life, gregarious nature, adventurous spirit, and her sometimes outrageous personality. Janet lived an unconventional life, traveling all over the world, making life-long friends wherever she went…including living on a U.S. Army base in Korea for two years teaching English. Her creativity knew no bounds, whether in her masterful story telling or in her ability to embellish. Janet was one of a kind.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 17, at Oconee Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Sexton’s House. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, 861 Newton Bridge Road, Athens, GA 30607.
