Born in Thomson, GA as the oldest son of Alton and Louise Smart, he worked as a delivery boy for Western Union during World War II. Geno lived and worked in Athens during the 1950s and 1960s as general manager for the E.C. Crimes Company. He later owned Athens Appliance Center and retired as general manager of Perteet TV and Appliance. Geno was a man of many talents. His hobbies included woodworking and coin and stamp collecting. Geno was a devoted Georgia Bulldog and Atlanta Falcons fan.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Jane Yarbrough Smart of Winterville; children, Cheree Tapley (Joe Terry) of Winterville and Terry Smart (Janet) of Athens; brother, Tommy Smart (Mary Beth) of Hartwell; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., prior to the service.
