Frances Landry Hutto, 84, of Athens passed away peacefully in her home with family at her side on December 13, 2020. Born July 6, 1936, in her family’s home in Waltham, Massachusetts, she was one of four daughters of the late Horace Isaac Landry and Gertrude MacDonald Landry. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Herbert Talmadge Hutto, Sr., of Fitzgerald, Georgia. They first met while he was at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts and she was a performer in a USO show. They were married when Herb returned from serving in Korea in 1955. When Herb said he wanted to go to law school, Fran thought great, Harvard is close. But the Georgia boy had his heart set on attending The University of Georgia Law School. And as Fran would say, “That’s how this Yankee became a Southern Belle.” They called Athens home ever since.
Fran worked as an administrative assistant at General Time and at the law firm of Stephens, Fortson, Bentley, and Griffin. Fran worked as a certified professional tax preparer at H&R Block Alps Road location for 37 years. Fran was a long-time member of St. James United Methodist Church where she loved singing in the choir. She was an active member of the Athens Cancer Auxiliary, The Glenwood Garden Club, Roadrunners, ACT Board Member, and an avid UGA tennis fan.
Her home was the family gathering place. Nothing delighted Fran (Nammie) more than to have it filled with her four boys, their families, and friends. Everyone was welcome and the more the merrier were her guiding principles.
Fran had a strong faith and trust in the Lord. She had full confidence that she would finally be reunited with her dear Herb in heaven.
She was also preceded in death by her in-laws Essie Mae McLeod and Jim McLeod, brother in-law Charlie Rowe, sister-in-law Ellie Long, niece June Porter and nephew Rick Potas.
The loving and close-knit family she leaves behind include her sisters Muriel Rowe, Ruth Potas, and Betty Jean Landry, her sons Bryan (Quincy), Tal (Julianne), Kevin (Missy), Ken (Angela). Seven grandchildren, Bryan, Joseph, Landry (Luke) Myers, Wes, Kyle, Sarah, and Ansley, and two adored and much-loved grand dogs, Zeke and Ike.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cathy for her gentle care, love and friendship that were a blessing to Fran over the last year.
Family and friends will gather for a graveside service at Evergreen Memorial Park at 3655 Atlanta Hwy, Athens, GA, at 2pm on Friday, December 18, 2020.
We respectfully ask all who come to wear a face covering and observe social distancing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James United Methodist Church Music Program, 111 West Lake Dr, Athens, GA 30606.
