A native of Colquitt County, GA Mrs. Henning was the daughter of the late Oscar and Margaret Elizabeth Vann Sloan and was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Henning. She was a graduate of Moultrie High School and received her diploma in nursing from the Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Henning received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia and her Masters of Education from the University of Georgia. She also received joint certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association and the Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology on adult health and women’s health. Along with fellow nurse practitioners, they developed policies and standards of care for women in the ten county area of the Northeast Health District of Public Health.
Mrs. Henning was a member of the Eleventh District Nurses Association and Georgia Nurses Association. She began her career in public health in Thomasville, later in Waycross, Homerville and finally in Athens where she began her role as a women’s health nurse practitioner. Mrs. Henning later became coordinator of nursing for the Northeast Health District and retired after 30 years.
As one of the earliest nurse practitioners, she presented several papers, one to the United States Senate sub-committee hearings on “Rural Healthcare and the Use of Nurse Practitioners.” Another was to the Georgia Board of Medical Examiners on “The Use of Nurse Practitioners in Northeast Georgia” and Region IV, Southeastern Family planning conference on “The Use of the Nurse Practitioner in Maternal Healthcare.”
Survivors include sons, Bill Henning Jr and wife, Jan of Oxford, MS and Hal Henning and wife, Susan of Athens; granddaughters, Christine Reed (Will), Caroline Henning, and Catherine Henning; grandsons, Alex Henning and Scott Brown, and brothers, Jimmie Sloan of Moultrie, GA and Johnnie Sloan of Plant City, FL.
A memorial service will be held 11AM Saturday, May 2nd in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7-9PM Friday, May 1st at the Henning residence and from 10-11AM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
