Cuyler Marshall (Buck) Adams, 75, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016. A native Athenian, he was born February 20, 1941, to Louise Ivey and Floyd Cecil Adams, Sr. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Adams and John F. Coplin, Sr.; Judith Adams and Peter Walker; and nephew, James C. Coplin.
Adams graduated from Athens High School in 1958, and attended the University of Georgia. In 1962, he entered the Peace Corps in its inaugural year, serving from 1962-1964, in Bahia, Brazil. Upon his return to the USA he resumed studies at UGA, majoring in foreign languages including Portuguese, German and Spanish.
From 1966-1971, Adams was chief administrator for the Peace Corps in Brazil, residing in Rio de Janeiro. Again returning to Athens, he held the position of Director of Community Development for the City of Athens under Mayors Julius Bishop and Upshaw Bentley. Adams owned and operated Adams Transfer and Storage of Athens, a company started by his grandfather in 1903, until his retirement in 2011.
As an active member of the community, Adams was a member of the Board of Directors of Athens Community Council on Aging, as well as a member of Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, Athens Country Club, and First Presbyterian Church.
Buck Adams is survived by his wife of 51 years, Diane Albert Adams; brother Brig. General Floyd Cecil Adams, Jr. (Ret.), and wife Sally; daughter Judith Ivey Adams Penoyer and husband John of Peachtree City, GA; son John Marshall Adams and wife Mika Nabeshima of Yokohama, Japan; daughter Rachel Adams Drueke and husband Ryan of Cumming, GA; sisters-in-law Judith Albert Thompson and husband Grannon, and Jeannie Hartis; grandchildren Emily, Sarah, and Grace Giglio; Sarah, Maureen and Jack Penoyer; Tyler and Leo Adams; Gabriel, Charlotte and Ivey Drueke; nieces and nephews John F. and Jennifer Coplin, Jr., Louisa Coplin and Jon Menick, Jeannette W. Coplin, Carroll Coplin, Susie Adams and Clement King, Floyd C. and Jennifer Adams, III., Edward H. and Kristin Adams, Franklin and Melanie Walker, Gregory and Maria Thompson, Alan and Cathy Thompson, Jill and Patrick Wright, Lynn and Wally Bradley, Elizabeth and Thomas George, Kelly Stripling, Margaret Carter, and Blake and Janeen Hartis.
Visitation will be held at the Sexton's House of Oconee Hill Cemetery, Tuesday, October 4, 2016, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., 297 Cemetery Street, Athens.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 185 E. Hancock Avenue, Athens, with interment immediately following at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
