
A native of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Mr. Cheek was the son of Julia Myrlene Chandler Cheek and the late (Retired) LCDR William Harold Cheek and was preceded in death by a brother, Lieutenant Manson Harold Cheek. He was a graduate of North Georgia College and State University with a degree in History and Economics and was a Ret Major with the United States Army. Mr. Cheek served as a commander of troops during Desert Storm and Desert Shield and was a former commander at the NORAD Space Command Center. During this time, he wrote a book that presidents fly with on Air Force One titled, “Continuity of Government Technology.” Mr. Cheek was a member of the Stone Mountain Masonic Lodge for 35 years, a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta, GA for 30 years, and was a Yaarab Red Devil Clown for 21 years. He was a Boy Scout troop leader for 20 years with 18 scouts that he coached and taught to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He worked for both Evergreen Memorial Park and Bernstein Funeral Home, was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, and attended Community Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Melissa Phillips Cheek of Danielsville; brothers, Richard Cheek of Atlanta, GA and Jeffery Cheek of Montrose, AL; sons, Brian Cheek and wife, Nina and Andrew Cheek all of Snellville, GA; step-children, Mark Streetman, Amber Messer, Jonathon Messer all of Danielsville, GA; nieces, Shannon C Smith, Christine C Thunberg, and great-nieces, Gena Thunberg and Aubrey Thunberg.
Funeral services will be held 10AM Monday, April 18th at Community Baptist Church with Dr. Kent Barrett officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery in Homer, GA. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Sunday, April 17th at Bernstein Funeral Home.
