Betty Brady Shuford, 95, of Athens, Georgia passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Born August 21, 1928 in Chadbourn, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Maude Moors Brady. Betty was predeceased in death by her brother Al Brady, Jr.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Athens, Georgia with the Rev. Dr. Ryan Baer and the Rev. Whitney Booth Lockard officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, North Carolina on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Hilary Shuford officiating.
Betty was married to Harry W. Shuford for 51 years before his death in 2001. She was a graduate of Montreat Anderson High School in Montreat, North Carolina and attended Queens College, the University of North Carolina and Lenoir Rhyne College. She was the ultimate hostess and devoted her life to her family, friends, dogs and bridge. Betty (known as BeBe to her family and extended family) was well-known for her sourdough and banana breads and the many hand-knitted Christmas stockings and afghans she lovingly created.
A beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Betty is survived by her children, Jan Shuford Lanier (Tom), Brent Shuford Gunn Grindler (Alex), Harry W. Shuford, Jr. (Hilary), and James B. Shuford (Donna), grandchildren, Beth Lanier West (Adam), Kathryn Lanier Williams (Joel), Bo Lanier (Leigh), Sam Gunn (Jenny), Robert Gunn (Emily), Brady Shuford, Trey Shuford, Ben Shuford and MaryBeth Shuford. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Lanier West, Price West, Jackson Williams, Emmy Lanier, Zeb Lanier, Zane Lanier, Declan Gunn, Vivien Gunn, Maple Gunn, Magnolia Gunn and Goldie Gunn and several nieces and nephews.
