She was born in Athens, GA on October 15, 1934, to the late James Roy Hamilton and Etta Mae Downs Hamilton. She was raised in Athens, and until her marriage she lived next door to her parents' grocery store (Hamilton’s Grocery) and her grandparents farm (Oconee Dairy Farm). She graduated from Young Harris Academy in Young Harris, GA, and she gained her appreciation for the theatre by studying that at Young Harris College. She married John Wingfield Marshall on July 5, 1953, and they raised their 5 children together in Columbus, GA, where she lived until his death, after which she returned to Athens. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbus. She loved the Georgia Bulldogs and never missed a football game, whether in person or on TV. She was a loving daughter, wife and mother.
She worked for several years in the Crystal Room of Kirven’s Department Store in Columbus. She was active in the PTA and in supporting sporting events for her children. Ann was a talented creator, putting those talents to work first by creating things for her family, whether it was making clothes, unique crafts, or making treats. Then, after her children were off on their own, she focused her talents on a different area. She volunteered as leader of the Costume shop at the Springer Opera House in Columbus for many years, and eventually, with a business partner opened the Costume Studio, where she made and provided costumes for many events in the Columbus area and beyond.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Hamilton, her son-in-law, Huel Gunter, and her great-grandson, Theodore Mitchell Bathalter.
Survivors include her children, Terri Pitcher and husband, Gene, John Marshall and wife, Hope, Martha Marshall and husband, Mitch Reeves, Barbara Gunter, and Elizabeth Vance and husband, Tracy; grandchildren: Anne Marshall, Courtney Thompson, Meg Marshall, Emily Bathalter and husband, Darien, and Macy Gunter; great-grandchildren: Landon Bowman, Tucker Thompson and Claire Thompson; brothers-in-law: Pat Marshall and wife Faye, Bill Marshall and sisters-in-law: Mary Wade and husband, Ted, and Joyce Hamilton; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
During the last months of her life, Ann received care from the entire staffs at Orchard Senior Living, Christopher's Bridge Home Care, and Agape Hospice. Her family is deeply grateful for the extra special attention that they gave her during this time.
