Born October 18, 1952 in Athens, GA, he attended Athens High School and the University of Georgia. Andy played football and baseball for both Athens High and the University of Georgia and was drafted by the New England Patriots to play professional football in 1974. After retiring from the NFL, Andy returned to Athens and created an insurance partnership which lasted over 30 years. Andy was Vice-President of the Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club, a former Board Member of Hope Haven and a supporter of the Ronald McDonald House, Beacon Schools of the Virgin Islands and the Special Olympics. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
Andy is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlotte Parsons Johnson; his daughters, Kristin Johnson Dickens and Kelley Brooke Johnson; his son and daughter-in-law, Cameron Brent Johnson and Esther Lee Johnson; his sisters, Ann Johnson Flohr and Ellen Johnson King; and his grandchildren, Greer, Leslie and Alexander.
Andy was a quiet and compassionate man who loved his family dearly. Guided by the principles taught by Cobern Kelley and the YMCA, Andy was a firm believer in the importance of teamwork in all aspects of his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
The family will have visitation on Saturday, May 19 from 3-6 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home and Cremation in Athens, GA.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
