Russell Dwight Barksdale

He died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at home.

Russell Barksdale was born Oct. 13, 1944, in Athens to Richard Mack Barksdale and Addie Leen Menefee Barksdale. He was a retired sergeant first class in the U.S. Army. He served in the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Barksdale was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon Richard Barksdale, Jimmy Guy Barksdale, and Henry Kenneth Barksdale; and sister, Prude Marie Jackson.

Survivors include his son, Russell Lee Barksdale of Covington, Ga.; daughter, Vicki Lynn Heller of LaGrange, Ky.; sisters, Lura Will May of Greenville, N.C., Loretta Maxine Herston of Athens, and Alice Jeanette Moss; grandchildren, Kathryn Elise Barksdale, Patrick Dalton Barksdale, Steven Michael Heller, and Lindsey Megan Heller.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Paul Heller, Mike Jackson, Kevin Barksdale, Tim Barksdale, John Richard Barksdale and Harold McCaffery.
